Giovanna Francisco

Giovanna Francisco (she/her) is an emerging movement artist in residence through the Arts District Liberty Station. Her creative practice draws inspiration from plants and wildlife, vulnerability, and authentic human expression. Embracing community and collective presence are integral to her practice. Her movement process explores the intersections between contemporary dance forms and improvisational practices to inform intentional choreography.

Giovanna studied at UCSD earning a BA in dance and a BA sociology with a minor in education studies. She is currently a company dancer for San Diego Dance Theater. In 2023, Giovanna was an artist in residence in the garden space of Art Produce (gallery and nonprofit) where she cultivated an evening-length work inspired by the movements of insects. Giovanna has had the pleasure of dancing in works by Matthew Armstrong, Isabel Desmet, Rachel Catalano, Allison Smith, Terry Wilson, Brianna Pilkinton, Sol dela Rosa and Yolande Snaith. She has choreographed for Live Arts Fest (2023 & 2024) and Emerging Choreographers Showcase and Prize (2023) through San Diego Dance Theater. Giovanna was a member of the inaugural iteration of DISCO RIOT’s (R)evolution Artist’s Program where she collaboratively created work as part of the 10-week S P A C E Rising Residency. She currently performs, choreographs, and teaches dance locally in San Diego.
