KMA Architecture

KMA Architecture & Engineering was founded in 1973 by William Krommenhoek. Originally named Krommenhoek and Associates, its patron client was San Diego Federal Savings and Loan. The firm went on to design over 250 branch banks for San Diego Federal, later named Great American First Savings Bank. In 1978 Jack McKeown became a partner, and the firm was renamed Krommenhoek McKeown and Associates. Over the next 12 years the firm expanded its portfolio to include work for commercial developers, hotels, office, multiunit residential, specialized technical and industrial buildings, and military work. In 1990 the firm was renamed KMA Architecture & Engineering and today is led by Partners Don Blair, Timothy Rubesh, and Robb Walker and Senior Associate Rich Guerena. The company consists of a team of 12 architects and design professionals involved in a wide variety of architectural projects. The KMA approach to design has been evolving for almost 40 years and can best be described as a “creative analytical” process founded on research leading to a comprehensive understanding of the constraints and opportunities impacting a specific architectural project. Within this framework multiple design solutions are developed and evaluated during the design process using a variety of design tools, both traditional and “high-tech.” The company continuously invests in its people, in the latest state-of-the-art design technologies, and in developing better methods with which to bring value to our clients’ projects.
