TILTshift Dance

TILTshift Dance Theater, LAB & Choreographers' Collective aims to build relationships and community through the medium of contemporary modern dance...sharing stories of the human experience.  

Who We Are: 
We are a project-based contemporary dance group under the artistic direction of Joyce Lien Kushner. Our dance aesthetic honors our collective modern and post-modern dance heritage, while celebrating and exploring the multitude of emerging contemporary styles.  We are a LAB offering creative workspace for dance artists to work on their craft. Choreographers come to play around and generate ideas prior to rehearsals. Teachers come to plan and develop class materials. Dancers come to warm-up, stretch and self-practice.  We are a collective of dance artists, makers, and teachers. We collaborate to make engaging work. We share our collective knowledge by offering dance and movement based classes. We work to build a dance community that thrives together.

  About Joyce Lien Kushner, Founder & Artistic Director: 
Joyce Lien Kushner is a SoCal native, trained in modern, contemporary, jazz, ballet, and tap. She is also a certified Progressing Ballet Technique® (PBT) instructor. As a dance teaching artist, Joyce has trained dancers of all ages and has performed and collaborated with artists all over California. In 2015 in San Francisco, Joyce founded TILTshift Dance as a vehicle to present her own work and that of her colleagues. Now in San Diego, she continues to teach, make work, and hold space for other dance artists to do the same.

Joyce Lien Kushner is an artist residency for the Emerging Artist program with NTC Foundation in ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station Arts District to help further these endeavors, thereby giving TILTshift Dance a new home.
