Cancer Therapy Specialists is a private physical therapy practice specializing in treating patients diagnosed with cancer and/or lymphedema. We have been San Diego's ONLY Oncology Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Specialty Practice since 2004. We offer Individualized Prescriptive Exercise Therapy, Advanced Lymphedema Care & Effective Edema and Wound Management.
Dr. Joe and Dr. Tammy Mondry are both licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy, Certified Lymphedema Therapists, as well as Certified Cancer Exercise Specialists. They both have 30+ years experience as physical therapists as well as over 20+ years experience in Oncology Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Care.
Our Individualized Prescriptive Exercise Therapy program focuses on identifying a cancer survivor’s unique health and aerobic fitness status in order to design and individualize a prescriptive exercise program that meets their specific needs. The goal of treatment is to reduce the many side effects experienced from cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Common side effects include chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, generalized muscle weakness, poor muscle endurance, limited range of motion, loss of function, balance and coordination difficulties as well as cognitive deficits.
The program is evidence-based and individualized, with the parameters of each training component based on documented clinical research outcomes of exercise therapy prescription for cancer survivors over the last 20 years. Every exercise program is uniquely designed for each patient to utilize the specific exercise mode, intensity, frequency, volume, dosage, and duration to achieve the best clinical outcome. Clinical research has shown the many benefits of participation in an individualized, structured, and directly supervised exercise program for cancer survivors.
Our Advanced Lymphedema Care is the ONLY program that utilizes the most advanced clinical assessment technology available today: LymphaTech 3-D Imaging as well as the LymphScanner. This technology allows for identifying the presence and severity of lymphedema, even before the onset of clinical signs or symptoms. We are also the ONLY facility in San Diego county that provides the Gold Standard of Care for Lymphedema, Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) which includes Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), compression bandaging, therapeutic exercise and skin & nail care.
Our Effective Edema & Wound Management program utilizes Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) techniques and multi-layered compression bandaging to successfully treat generalized edema that results from other causes. Edema can develop from surgical intervention (such as orthopedic, plastic, and vascular surgeries) as well as from other health conditions such as Congestive Heart Failure or Pulmonary Edema. Edema can be either “pitting” or “non-pitting”, and both forms of edema respond extremely well to treatment intervention. Often clients experiencing lower extremity edema have also developed open wounds that can be difficult to manage by conventional methods.
