Global War on Terrorism
The Global War on Terrorism image is the Battlefield Cross- a time-honored military memorial that symbolizes the Honor, Service, and Sacrifice of our Servicemembers killed in battle- that stands upright on a base that pays tribute to those lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. The life-size image is made up of a pair of boots, a rifle, and a helmet, consisting of approximately 6,000 screws. With the permission a Gold Star Mom, a Dog Tag of a Fallen Marine hangs from the rifle. The Flag at half-mast is painted within the over one thousand regular-sized Chrome Dog Tags. Twenty-Two Dog Tags with a simulated Bullet Hole are positioned randomly in the background to represent the staggering number of servicemembers who have died by suicide after their return from the Battlefield, nearly five times the number of casualties from the GWOT theater itself. There is also a cluster of three of the twenty-two Bullet Hole Dog Tags positioned together in remembrance of the sailors of the USS George Washington and the trend of cluster suicides.
