Nitty Gritty Nuts and Bolts Read and Critique Workshop

Writing a well-written narrative is mastering the energies of your story – the multi-faceted energies that determine the moods, reactions, choices and traits of your characters, the energies between characters, the drive of the pacing, action and dialogue to create a deeper, emotionally powerful resonance within your total story structure. If you’re serious about your writing, this hands-on dramatic writing workshop will bring a new perspective to understanding these elements.

Using a multi-level approach to take a deeper look at your story, Matt shows you how to bring your writing process into focus by analyzing the energetic dynamics that make up a well-structured story. Students are encouraged to bring works in progress for group analysis which will focus upon bringing a greater understanding of how these story elements interact, support each other, and drive the unfolding of the overall story arc.

Short lectures based on the all day in-depth read & critique session will use works in progress to highlight, explore, and define what makes a solid narrative.

Personal critiquing skills will also be honed and sharpened in this workshop as well as techniques which bring a fresh perspective to story craft.

Students should bring copies of five pages of a work in progress which will get a group critique and a line-edit by Matt.

All genres, including short stories, novels, memoirs, screenplays, and works of nonfiction will be read, analyzed, and discussed.
