Contemporary Modern

In this class, you have the opportunity to learn from one of our SDDT Company Dancers, and one of our Creative Team members! Teachers will rotate every 2 weeks.

Lauren's Class:
Lauren’s class aims to cultivate efficiency, fluidity, and ease of movement in pathways that move through the space and in and out of the floor. Her class usually includes guided or improvisational prompts for centering and warming up, structured exercises for technique building and alignment, and expansive phrasework that often moves between bound and momentum-driven movement. Encouraging joy and curiosity are of particular importance.

Matthew's Class:
This is a dance class for intermediate-to-advanced skill levels. Using different contemporary and modern dance techniques such as Release, Cunningham, Floorwork, and acrobatics, we will explore the possibilities that exist in moving outside of the vertical axis and investigate the efficiency in alignment, resistance of gravity, head-tail connection, accumulation/expansion, among other technical themes and how they apply to a dancing body. We will identify and combine different points of support on the dancing body to form new possibilities of efficient weight transfer to travel through the floor.
