wa (和): Harmony Through Sashiko Stitching, Kukicha Tea, and Haiku Poetry
Join textile artist Sanae Suzuki for an immersive workshop at San Diego Writer’s Ink exploring the beauty and mindfulness of sashiko, the traditional Japanese hand-stitching practice rooted in care, rhythm, and sustainability. Participants will learn foundational sashiko techniques while creating a komezashi (“rice stitch”) pattern on natural Japanese cotton fabric, followed by a quiet tea pause featuring traditional kukicha twig tea. The experience concludes with a haiku workshop at VMOTA led by local author Tania Pryputniewicz, inspired by the Japanese concept of wa (和), or harmony with self, community, and nature. No experience is necessary.
