With the fall just around the corner, it’s time for the seasons to shift, and the colors in a landscape along with it! Fall is a visually inspiring time of year, with the bright yellows, oranges, and reds that begin to take over our city.
Fauvism was an art movement that originated in France, which is known for its use of intense color and expressive brushwork. In this workshop, we will focus on the popular subject of lush gardens, which was a favorite of Fauve painters. By studying the French Fauvists, you will learn how to intensify the vibrant colors of nature and emulate this expressive European movement.
We'll start by creating a color study to establish the brilliant saturated palette and explore the Fauve touch, which is very specific and based on the psychology of color. You'll learn to quick-sketch with the brush and how to translate realistic color into the Fauve’s palette. This study will lay the foundation for your larger, more refined painting of a lush garden scene - this will be your personal interpretation of Fauve landscapes. You'll discover how to paint with saturated colors, and lights and shadows, utilizing the Fauve techniques you’ve learned.
Whether you're a seasoned painter or just starting out, this workshop will reinvigorate your palette and infuse new energy into your paintings.
