"Locals' Summer" art exhibit by Michaela Jean Upp

Now on exhibit in the Command Center Gallery, building 200, 10am-4pm through November 1.

A love letter to the San Diego coast, in its most enchanting season. Artwork by Michaela Jean Upp,
Named Best Painter in San Diego Magazine’s 2026 Best of San Diego awards.

The exhibit celebrates San Diego’s “fifth season.” The water is still warm, the sun sits lower and softer, the air has a little crispness to it, but it’s still completely right to spend the day at the beach. The crowds thin out, and for a few weeks September and October it feels like the coast opens just for us. “Locals’ Summer” is the celebration of that window.

Michaela Jean Upp is a painter, mother, and native San Diegan whose work is defined by a style she calls whimsical romanticism, a poetic fusion of emotional memory, nature, and imagination. Her paintings invite viewers to return to the magic of the natural world and to the wonder-filled lives they once knew as children. Her studio in Arts District Liberty Station is located in Barracks 15, second floor suite 213.
