Join us for a vibrant cultural experience that bridges tradition and contemporary art! Explore Kolam, a 5,000-year-old art form from southern India that symbolizes happiness, prosperity, and harmonious coexistence. Guided by Visual Art Educator Meera Ramanathan, you’ll dive into the rich tradition of Kolam while celebrating the festive spirit of Holi, the Festival of Colors!
What to Expect at the Event
· Learn about the history and cultural significance of Kolam.
· Create your own geometric designs on burlap fabric using simple, accessible tools like Sharpies, oil pastels, and paint sticks – the materials will be provided.
· Experiment with color inspired by Holi, the Festival of Colors.
· Further your understanding of color’s psychological impact.
· Develop skills in symmetry, precision, and creativity.
This hands-on workshop is perfect for all skill levels and designed to foster an appreciation for this unique form of art, promote cultural exchange, and build community connections.
Meera Ramanathan is an award winning Project Resource Teacher with San Diego Unified School District and teaches visual art to elementary school students. She is also a paper collage and hand embroidery artist. Her works have been displayed in several art shows. She moved to San Diego from India and has a Master’s degree in the history of fine arts, drawing, and painting with a specialization in textile design.
