Botanical Drawing for Everyone!

Sunday, September 13, 9am-12pm
Beginners welcome! Ages 13+ welcome! In this fun, hands-on class Instructor Marley Peifer will guide students in learning how to identify and illustrate several common plant families of San Diego. After warming up and learning about botany, students will dive into individual projects based on specimens and photos. Each student will leave with an illustration of their chosen plant, as well as the skills and motivation to continue an independent learning journey through the botanically-rich playground that is San Diego. Even complete beginners will feel empowered after this class.

Before Class: Students are welcome to bring any drawing tools they already use and feel comfortable with. It’s also highly recommended that students bring a few photos of plants they’ve taken—whether from a hike, your garden, or around your neighborhood. If you don’t have plant photos, you’re welcome to work from live specimens found in or near the organic garden at San Diego Craft Collective. If you plan to take photos before class, please arrive 15–30 minutes early to stroll through the garden and capture images. The organic garden is located on Roosevelt Road, next to the Dorothea Laub Building, and is easy to spot by its colorful pencil fence. You’re welcome to open the gate and explore the garden at your convenience.
