Bead Embroidery on a Used Baseball Workshop
A truly unique workshop to start off the new year!
Textile art is a limitless fine art form where artists push the boundaries and present innovative methods of textile expression. Maracole Bijoux is an artist, currently exhibiting in our Fiber Art Now: ARTwear exhibition, who does just that! Maracole utilizes baseball embroidery to explore themes of luxury, femininity, sustainability, and gender.
Through this workshop, participants will be invited to expand their creativity by learning techniques for creating their own beaded baseball. In Maracole's Bead Embroidery on a Used Baseball workshop, students will learn how to "skin" a baseball, explore decorative embroidery on an unconventional surface, and transform their piece into a decoration or wearable art, such as a pendant or bracelet. This class is categorized as intermediate, as participants should be comfortable threading a needle and working with beads.
Students will walk away from this workshop having completed one of these three items:
A single embroidered baseball with a magnet to decorate the fridge
A single embroidered baseball without a magnet to be used as a pendant, for example
A bracelet with a single embroidered baseball (for advanced participants)
Materials
Instructor will provide used baseballs, needles and threads, hollowed coin magnets, polyfil, and glue for everyone to use in class.
Students are asked to bring:
Embroidery or sewing scissors
A beading mat or felt sheet to work on
Magnifying glass or own headlamp if they need extra light/vision assistance
Seed-beads size 11/0 – quantity 1 tube per color – in at least 2 colors (but more color options are encouraged)
Any other semi-precious stone or pearl bead – size 3mm minimum, 10mm max. Have fun with your choice of decorative beads! Students are encouraged to be creative with their own embroidery and therefore can use just about every kind of bead for their project, from plastic to pearl, stone, or metal, from rice paper to ceramic and wood. If you have made your own beads in polymer clay, you are welcome to bring those to class as well.
If you prefer not to gather your own supplies, VMOTA will have scissors, a felt mat, seed beads, and semi-precious stones for an additional $5 kit fee, which can be purchased at check out. To ensure we have enough supplies, advanced notice is required if you would like to purchase a kit.
Skill level required: Intermediate, participants should be comfortable threading a needle and working with beads.
Cost
$130 for Members, $150 for Non-Members.
