Sundays, Sept 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 18, 10am – 12pm, with last class 10am – 12:30pm
This beginner-friendly 5-week pottery course focused on learning the foundations of wheel throwing while creating functional and personal ceramic pieces. Throughout the 5-week course, students will explore wheel throwing fundamentals including centering, pulling walls, trimming, foot rings, handle attachment, surface decoration, underglazes, and glazing techniques.
During the first week, students will be introduced to the pottery wheel and learn the basics of centering and shaping simple forms while getting comfortable working with clay. In the second week, students will continue building confidence on the wheel while creating more intentional functional forms such as mugs, bowls, and small plates. The third week focuses on trimming and refinement techniques, including foot rings, surface cleanup, and handle attachment to help elevate and finish each piece. During the fourth week, students will explore surface design and decoration using underglazes, texture, carving, and decorative details to give their work its own personality and style. After bisque firing (no class week), the final class will focus on glazing and finishing techniques. Students will learn how different glazes interact and complete their finished ceramic pieces.
This course is designed for complete beginners as well as students looking to strengthen their skills. Ages 16+ years
