What Lies Within: A Solo Exhibition by Brenda Salamone

This collection, Geomorphic Abstractions, is about the importance of digging deeper and seeing beyond the superficial and thus invites the viewer to explore What Lies Within. Brenda's technique came about from examining the crystals and stones in her collection and beginning by doing a very rough sketch on her canvas or board where she blocks in the largest color areas. She then lays in a tint of color that is the complement to the dominant colors in the stone. Her work is never poured, it is developed layer by layer, using a combination of meticulous brushstrokes and deliberate mark-making. There are big, juicy swaths of color that dominate, and then the veining cuts through, forming interesting little pathways. Working in oils, pastels, acrylic mixed media, and occasionally encaustic hot wax, she incorporates iridescent pigments and metallic leaf to emphasize the sparkle of the Earth’s treasures. With her intense and saturated color palette, the painting takes on an other-worldly aspect, no longer a specific stone, but a fantastic venue of color and sparkle for the eyes to explore.
