Rocks, Water, and Reflections

Rocks, Water, and Reflections - Sandra Mollon
When I was a young woman, I stood in front of an amazing painting at the Smithsonian that was so realistic I swore it was a photograph until I got my nose right up to it and saw the meticulous work that went into it. I was in awe.

I started making quilts in the late 1980s and really developed a love for fabric. At first, of course, I made traditional quilts. Then, a few years ago I began to make raw-edge photo derived collage art quilts. They are composed of small pieces of fabric hand cut, fused in place, and quilted. When I posted pictures of those quilts on social media, many who saw them told me that at first glance, they thought it was just a photo or a painting of the thing itself, not a quilt. I loved those types of responses, as it brought me back to my first love in the art world, and the quilts are a wonderful form of Trompe-l’oeil (a highly realistic optical illusion) done in textiles.

I have done a series of raw-edge fused art quilts, and I love the large landscape as well as the intimate landscapes. These pieces are widely appealing, restful, and often highly realistic. The pieces in this series usually have some or all of the elements of the title. Things like textured moss-covered rocks and reflections add to the interest.
