Summer will be ARTrageous at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station – San Diego’s fast growing arts and culture destination. The community is invited to enjoy free outdoor concerts on the North Promenade. Scheduled for July, the three evenings of live music will feature a wide range of San Diego musicians from Samba to Blues to Rock n’ Roll that are sure to appeal to music lovers of all ages.
All concerts start at 5 PM. Presented on the North Promenade between Stone Brewing World Bistro and Garden y and the vibrantly painted GREETINGS from Naval Training Station mural. The public is invited to arrive early, picnic and enjoy the art galleries, studios, and museums of the burgeoning ARTS DISTRICT. All ages invited. No alcohol allowed to be brought in.
Saturday, July 1: B-Side Players and Sol Y Mar
HEADLINER: The B-Side Players incorporate the sounds of Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico and Brazil with the funk, rock and jazz, rhythms of their homeland. The players have expanded their sound by playing with the likes of Ben Harper, The Wailers, Toots and The Maytals, James Brown and War. They are known for igniting crowds with their fierce rhythms and uplifting message of unity and consciousness! 10 time San Diego Music Award – winning genre blenders.
OPENING ACT: A Sol Y Mar event transports fans to the biggest party on Earth: Carnival! Brazilian Samba Dancers showcase the amazement and fantasy of the vibrancy of Carnival with beauty, splendor, and a lavish array of colorful feathers. A true World Music event, featuring authentic Brazilian musicians and some of the most gorgeous and talented Samba dancers in the industry!
Saturday, July 15: The Highwayman and Casey Hensley
HEADLINER The Highwayman is Tony Suraci’s tribute to the original Highwaymen: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings. Prepare to be amazed how one man can emulate all four of Outlaw Country’s favorite musical icons. Tony’s 10 piece All Star band captures the essence of the Outlaw Country movement with songs like “Me and Bobby McGee”, “On the Road Again”, “Good Ole Boys” and “Folsom Prison Blues.”
OPENING ACT: A Little Bit of Blues, Soul and Rock N Roll! Casey Hensley has been performing since the age of 5. Now, at 24 years old, Casey records for The Universal Movie Department, and puts her heart and soul into fronting The Casey Hensley Band, which includes many different world class musicians.
Saturday, July 29: Vaud and the Villains
HEADLINER: Vaud & the Villains bring their raucous 1930s New Orleans orchestra and cabaret show to Liberty Station! Infusing music of the early jazz era with the showmanship of a rock ‘n’ roll concert, be ready to get-down! “Vaud & the Villains’ exuberant fusion of vintage New Orleans jazz, R&B and gospel music, wildly inventive arrangements and dynamic theatrical performance is simply a wonder to behold.” (Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times)
The Liberty Station Concert Series is produced in partnership with Beer, Food, & Music, the Belly Up production manager Damian DeRobbio’s new venture. Damian is host of What’s Up at the Belly Up podcast with Meryl Klemow and Live @ The Belly Up on KPBS.
With nearly 120 galleries, museums, artists, makers and creators throughout the campus, ARTS DISTRICT will be bursting with FREE summer fun. There are dozens of exhibits, concerts, performances, film screenings, gallery walks, classes, workshops and Summer Camps for all ages and interests throughout the 100-acre campus at the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma.
